Christmas Cross Stitch Gift: When to Start by Size
When to start a Christmas cross stitch gift, by chart size: start-by dates worked back from December 25, 2026, and the largest chart you can still finish.

A stitched Christmas gift goes wrong in one of two ways: it starts too late, or it starts too big. Both come from the same mistake, which is choosing the chart first and doing the arithmetic later. This page does the arithmetic first, backwards from Friday, December 25, 2026, so you can see which sizes are still realistic from where you are today.
Nobody can tell you how fast you stitch, so the tables below use two example paces and a stated number of hours a week. They're arithmetic, not claims about how fast people stitch. Put your own numbers in.
Start-by dates by chart size
Assumptions for this table, so you can adjust them: 5 hours of stitching a week, stitching weeks rounded up to a whole week, plus 2 weeks for making the chart, buying floss and fabric, and washing and finishing. Christmas Day 2026 is a Friday, so every date below is a Friday too.
| Chart size | Stitches | Finished on 14-count | Start by, at 300 stitches/hr | Start by, at 150 stitches/hr |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 40 × 40 | 1,600 | 2.9 × 2.9 in | November 27 (4 weeks) | November 20 (5 weeks) |
| 60 × 60 | 3,600 | 4.3 × 4.3 in | November 20 (5 weeks) | November 6 (7 weeks) |
| 80 × 80 | 6,400 | 5.7 × 5.7 in | November 6 (7 weeks) | October 9 (11 weeks) |
| 100 × 100 | 10,000 | 7.1 × 7.1 in | October 23 (9 weeks) | September 4 (16 weeks) |
| 120 × 150 | 18,000 | 8.6 × 10.7 in | September 18 (14 weeks) | June 26 (26 weeks) |
| 150 × 150 | 22,500 | 10.7 × 10.7 in | August 28 (17 weeks) | May 15 (32 weeks) |
Finished size is stitches divided by fabric count, because DMC defines the count as the number of stitches you can make in an inch.
The inconvenient part is at the bottom of the table. If you're reading this in mid-October, a detailed portrait for this Christmas is already late at either example pace, unless you stitch far more than 5 hours a week. That isn't a reason to give up on the photo. It's a reason to choose a smaller chart of it now, and start the big one for a birthday. Cross stitch gifts from photos shows the same method for any occasion.
Work it the other way: the biggest chart you can still finish
If the date is fixed and the chart isn't, turn the sum round. Count the whole weeks left until Christmas, take off 2 for supplies and finishing, multiply by your hours a week, then by your stitches per hour. That is your stitch budget. The square root of it is the side of the largest square chart that fits.
As arithmetic, at 5 hours a week:
| If you start on | Whole weeks left | Stitching hours | Budget at 150/hr | Budget at 300/hr |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| October 16 | 10 | 40 | 6,000 (about 77 × 77) | 12,000 (about 109 × 109) |
| November 1 | 7 | 25 | 3,750 (about 61 × 61) | 7,500 (about 86 × 86) |
| November 15 | 5 | 15 | 2,250 (about 47 × 47) | 4,500 (about 67 × 67) |
| December 1 | 3 | 5 | 750 (about 27 × 27) | 1,500 (about 38 × 38) |
A rectangle works too, as long as width × height stays inside the budget: 12,000 stitches is also about 90 × 133.
Two numbers change this table more than anything else:
- Hours a week. Doubling from 5 to 10 doubles every budget. Count the hours you actually stitch in an ordinary December week, with parties, travel and shopping in it, not the hours you hope for.
- Stitched squares, not chart squares. A chart with an unstitched background only costs the squares you actually stitch. If a third of a 100 × 100 chart is bare fabric, the work is closer to 6,700 stitches than 10,000.
Measure your own pace first
Before you trust either column, get your own figure. It takes twenty minutes.
- Pick a chart like the one you're planning. A photo chart with lots of color changes is slower than a motif with big blocks of one color.
- Choose an area of middle difficulty, not the easy background.
- Stitch one 10 × 10 block, 100 stitches, with a timer running. Include threading and color changes, because the real project has them.
- Convert to stitches per hour. 100 stitches in 20 minutes is 300 an hour; in 40 minutes, 150 an hour.
- Use a slower figure than you measured if the gift chart has more confetti than your test block.
Then put your figure into the start-by sum above. How long does cross stitch take goes further into timing, and how long a pet portrait takes covers the slowest common gift.
What the 2 weeks around the stitching cover
The 2 extra weeks in the tables are a minimum, not a comfortable margin.
- The chart and supplies. Choosing the photo, making the chart and buying floss. Every color in the key needs at least one skein, and a shop may not have all of them in stock in December.
- Preparing the fabric. DMC recommends leaving at least 8 cm / 3 inches of fabric all round the design, and hemming or taping the edges so they don't fray while you work.
- Washing and pressing. DMC's washing guidance is cold water with a little non-biological detergent, rolling in towels, drying until damp, then pressing face down between towels with a warm iron. Don't plan that for December 24.
- Finishing. An ornament or a hoop can be done at home in an evening or two. A framer's turnaround in December is theirs to quote, so ask before you commit to a framed piece.
- Posting it. If the gift travels, work back from your carrier's published holiday send-by date instead of December 25, and move every date in the table earlier by the difference.
How to finish cross stitch covers each finishing option, including ornaments.
Christmas gifts that fit a short deadline
Small charts are where a late start still works, and they suit a photo better than you might expect.
- A photo ornament. A pet's face or a baby's first Christmas in about 40 to 60 stitches across. At that size simple, high-contrast photos work best. Photo Christmas ornament cross stitch covers which photos survive being that small.
- A stocking with a name. Lettering and a small motif, rather than a full portrait. A personalized Christmas stocking goes through the sizing.
- A tight crop instead of the whole scene. A dog's head rather than the dog on the sofa keeps the likeness and cuts thousands of stitches. Try the crop in the free preview and watch the chart width drop.
- One of several quick ideas. Quick cross stitch gifts collects projects that fit into a weekend or two.
A finer fabric doesn't save time. It makes the same chart smaller, with the same number of stitches. A 60 × 60 chart is 4.3 inches across on 14-count and about 3.3 inches on 18-count, and it takes the same hours on both.
If you're behind in November
Decide early, while every option is still open:
- Crop tighter or reduce the width and re-export the chart at the smaller size.
- Leave the background unstitched and let the fabric color do the work.
- Stitch the face, leave the rest for a second gift later.
- Give the chart and the started piece with a card. For many people, knowing that the work is being made for them matters as much as holding it.
What rarely works is planning to stitch faster at the end. The last stretch is also the washing, pressing and finishing, and rushed tension shows on the finished piece.
Frequently asked questions
When should I start a cross stitch Christmas gift?
Work back from December 25 using your own pace. Divide the chart's stitches by your stitches per hour, then by the hours you stitch each week, and add about two weeks for supplies and finishing. As arithmetic, a 100 by 100 chart at 300 stitches an hour and 5 hours a week needs a start by October 23, 2026.
Is mid-October too late for a cross stitch Christmas gift?
Not for a small one. From October 16 there are ten weeks until Christmas. Keep two for supplies and finishing and you have 40 hours at 5 hours a week. At 300 stitches an hour that is 12,000 stitches, about a 109 by 109 chart; at 150 stitches an hour, about 77 by 77.
What size cross stitch can I finish by Christmas?
Multiply the hours you have by your stitches per hour, and that's your stitch budget. Take the square root for the largest square chart. As arithmetic, 20 hours at 300 stitches an hour is 6,000 stitches, which is a chart of about 77 by 77, or 5.5 inches square on 14-count Aida.
How do I find out how fast I stitch?
Time yourself stitching one 10 by 10 block, which is 100 stitches, from a chart like the one you're planning. Use an area of middle difficulty rather than a plain background. If the block takes 20 minutes, your rate is 300 stitches an hour. Use that number, not an average from the internet.
What if I won't finish my Christmas cross stitch in time?
Change the plan in November, not on December 20. Crop tighter, leave the background unstitched, or make a small ornament from the same photo now and the full piece later. Giving the chart and the started work with a card is also a real gift, and it's better than a rushed piece.
